Mamaroneck, NY - Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) applauds Mayor Norman Rosenblum and the Mamaroneck Village Trustees for championing the latest resolution in New York State that bans the distribution of harmful plastic bags in stores.

In place of plastic, the resolution mandates the use of reusable bags and paper bags produced of recycled materials.

“Plastic bags are environmentally harmful and completely unnecessary.  The problems caused by plastic bags are immense, yet the solution is simple—residents must BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag).

CCE commends the Village of Mamaroneck for passing a resolution that will substantially increase reusable bag use among residents,  and prevent the use of tens of thousands of plastic bags each year, which pollute Westchester’s parks and beaches and damage the Long Island Sound,” stated Jordan Christensen, Hudson Valley Program Coordinator.

CCE generated public interest and support submitting over 40 signatures from village residents and generating over 70 phone calls to village officials.

Plastic bags pollute beaches, parks, streams, and roadways; clog storm drains, and kill wildlife.

The Village of Mamaroneck joins other municipalities that have banned plastic bags in New York, including the City of Rye, NY; Village of Southampton, NY; and Village of East Hampton, NY. “The Village of Mamaroneck joins the City of Rye at the forefront of the movement in Westchester County and in New York State.  Globally, waterfront communities have been leading this movement in order to protect the beaches, estuaries, and oceans that their residents rely on.  Tonight’s vote represents a significant step towards protecting the Long Island Sound and natural environment,” concluded Ms. Christensen.
