Greenburgh Library Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Elmsford, NY – The Greenburgh Public Library will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
A schedule of events for Saturday, April 20, include:
11:00 a.m. – Children’s Concert: The Bierko’s
This dynamic couple returns to the Greenburgh Public Library to lead a musical extravaganza for children of all ages. Audience members will help us look forward to the next 50 years of library service. To register please call (914) 721-8227 starting April 3, 2013.
11:30-1:30 p.m. – Collaborative Art Project: “The Alternet”
Patrons will participate (if they want) in a collaborative art project conceived and organized by artist/sculptor, Carla Rae Johnson. Using materials provided by the artists, participants will be able to create their own art on individual cards. The art will become part of the project/exhibit or can be taken home.
For the workshop at the Greenburgh Public Library, Carla Rae and some of the creative individuals with whom she collaborated with will talk about making creativity a daily habit and finding ways to make every day unique and memorable. Since participants in the “Alternet” range in age from students to seniors, you will hear from young artists and writers as well as some who are more “seasoned” or “professional.” They will also talk about why libraries are so important to artists and creative thinkers and, perhaps share some stories of surprising and creative discoveries made in card-catalogs and library stacks.
In 2010, Carla Rae purchased an old wooden card-catalog with fifty drawers. The catalog sat dormant in her studio for a year and a half while she contemplated how to use it. Finally, the idea emerged to honor its original function: fill the drawers with cards; hundreds of individual cards. That was when she invited every creative individual she knew to collaborate with her on the project.
2:00 p.m. – Concert: “Straight Ahead”
In honor of the Library’s 50th anniversary Straight Ahead will perform music from 1963. They will feature such hits as “Be My Baby”, “Mocking Bird”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, and “Up on the Roof”, from artists such as Roy Orbison, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Bob Dylan, and Dion and the Belmonts.
Straight Ahead has been performing in and around the New York area for over 20 years. Formed by co-leaders Donna Harris and John Bauers the band has been featured in NY’s best venues, such as Lincoln Center, the Waldorf, Cipriani’s, the Rainbow Room, the Pierre, the Plaza, public parks and libraries, nightclubs, private parties, and often ventures out of town and overseas. Collectively, the band has shared the stage with such luminaries as Ben E. King, Garth Brooks, Enya, Vanilla Fudge, The Hollies, The Cadillacs, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, The Shilites, and Neal Sedaka.
